Eight Tamil films launched in one day

Vijay's next film titled "Villu" was among eight Tamil films launched on June 6. Directed by Prabhu Deva, the film is a remake of the Hindi film "Soldier". Playing opposite Vijay is Asin. Cinematographer is Ravi Varman and music director is Devi Sri Prasad. Vadivelu has been given a meaty role in the film. K. Karunamurthi and C. Arunpandian are producing the film under the banner of Ayangaran International. The shooting commenced at Neikkaranpatti near Palani.

Use corporates for growth, says Kamal

Kamal Haasan while speaking at the audio launch function of Sathya Movies-Sathya Jyothi Films' "Jayam Kondan" in Chennai on June 7 said corporate houses could not be stopped from entering Tamil film production and allayed any fears of the industry in this regard.

He said they should see how best the corporates could be used for the growth of the industry and to meet the film-makers' growing needs of technology. One need not be apprehensive about the entry of corporates, he stressed.

Tamil film body serves ultimatum to non-member actors

Chennai, June 8 (IANS) Sarath Kumar, president of the South Indian Artistes' Association (SIAA), has asked all non-member Tamil movie performers to either enrol before June 30 or face total non-cooperation from the film industry.

To shore up SIAA finances, its general body passed a unanimous resolution necessitating the donation of 2.5 percent of all top stars' emoluments to the organisation, Kumar said Saturday.

Ace director Bharatiraja was elected unopposed president of the South Indian Directors Association at an executive committee meeting on June 8. The meeting was held at the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce.

Apex court clears way to screening of 'Dasavathaaram'

New Delhi, June 12 (IANS) The Supreme Court Thursday cleared the decks for the release of Kamal Haasan's magnum opus "Dasavathaaram", dismissing pleas by a Hindu sect that the film would hurt religious sentiments of some.

The court dismissed all cases against the Rs.1.3 billion film, in which Kamal Haasan plays 10 roles. The court asked the petitioner to watch the movie first and said if they found anything against Hindu beliefs they could approach the court again.

Rajinikanth's latest film "Kuselan" is ready and its audio cassette will be launched on June 30, Director P. Vasu told mediapersons in Chennai. The film is slated for release by the end of next month.
