Dont Do It

I would highly advise anyone, except for the extreme animal activists, to stay away from this movie. It actually made me hungry for a chicken sandwich and made me want to go hunt some buffalo.... Full review

I like Molly Shannon, and the acting was somewhat believable, but the pacing and the story were excruciatingly bad. One of the worst movies I have seen in quite some time.... Full review

The acting was fine, but it was neither entertaining, moving, nor had a point. If it was trying to champion Vegan causes, by that account it would also be a failure.... Full review

There were some funny scenes in this movie. I guess it got a little more depressing as the movie kept going. There were great scenes with the dogs. It was a sad movie about a sad single woman's life. I left... Full review

As a single man who rescues dogs from shelters, I was oddly drawn into this movie as if it were my life being played out on screen. I think the character's realization of the lack of respect and understanding she received... Full review

I didn't just get teary eyed I really wept out loud. If your are an animal lover this movie may be too hard to take especially for kids. But I think the story was important to tell which was finding meaning... Full review
Worst movie of the year

This is definitely, hands down, the worst movie of the year. It is pointless. If you saw the previews you saw all the funny bits. In fact, the funny bits taken out of context are funny, but are not at all... Full review
Well crafted story

Although it seemed overly silly at times, so does life -- and the story turned out to be far more universal and relevant to the 'human' condition than was first apparent.... Full review

Another Gem in a summer of sequels and huge blockbusters. Year of the Dog starring Molly Shannon as a single woman who works as an administrative assistant and goes home to her dog every night. One night though, the dog didn't... Full review

The Age
Consequently, she pushes herself further and further off the rails until even her friendly neighbour (the always-good John C. Reilly) begins to worry about her state of mind. With an obvious talent for character nuance, writer/director Mike White does a superb job blending comedy with drama as we see dog devotee Peggy drift from being endearing to annoying to outright dangerous. ... YEAR OF THE DOG is a sympathetic study of a lonely woman who makes some wrong choices but White is also good at nailing the characters around her; the selfish neighbour, the over-protective sister-in-law, the unreliable boss, the good-hearted, self-centered friend, Regina King and the disappointing Newt. ... Time Out
Though the film falters in terms of its lack of a streamlined narrative, there is no denying that it is packed to the rafters with meaty ideas and characters who are charged with a satisfying moral ambivalence. A rebound date with her knife and gun-loving neighbour (John C Reilly) proves futile. ... Full Review

The Good There's a well-known t-shirt slogan that goes, the more time I spend with people, the more I love my dog, and Year of the Dog is, essentially, a blackly comic dramatisation of that slogan. Providing you don't go in expecting a laugh riot, this is an enjoyable, blackly comic drama with a strong performance from Molly Shannon. ... Full Review

Peggy Spade, the hapless dog-lover at the center of Year of the Dog , is at once familiar and satirical. White also elicits some wonderful performances. As portrayed by Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon, Peggy is a potent seriocomic creation. ... Full Review
