This film really should have been great.
On the negative side, Wild Wild West deserved a lot better than this half-baked effort.
And even with some really well done special effects
Gordon is actually my favorite character in this film.

There's only one really good thing about Wild Wild West....I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a movie.....Will Smith looks fabulous, darling, in his black suit, black hat, and dark glasses, riding his black horse.....this has been a lousy summer for movies.....The problem is the slim story:.... ... As Jim West, Will Smith is Will Smith, still the suave, wise-cracking hero who saves the day.
In hot pursuit of Loveless, West and Gordon hop aboard a train, do wacky things, get off and are captured by Loveless, are chased by round metal razors through a cornfield, and finally, save the president, as well as a scantily-clad damsel-in-distress (Salma Hayek), and defeat Loveless and his entourage.

It's plain to see that Barry Sonnenfeld doesn't understand what made "The Wild Wild West" so appealing.
Wild Wild West" is rated PG-13 for violent hand-to-hand (and foot) combat, gunplay and explosions, vulgar double-entendres and other sexual humor, female nudity and glimpses of some nude artwork, scattered profanities and use of racial epithets.

Wild Wild West,'' a loose takeoff on the popular '60s TV series, would like to conjure a surreal collision of Western and sci-fi....Even when the jokes fell flat (which, to me, was most of the time), you could always be diverted by extraterrestrials whose heads looked like exploding eggplants..... ... the actors fill in the movie's gaps admirably.....like a mechanical road-show version of a hit Broadway musical....His speaking voice alone may be the movie's single greatest delight, his vowels like a smear of honey, lazy and golden and nastily sensuous.....Kevin Kline is so intuitive and so intelligent....The goofy gags and impressive effects felt pleasurably casual and effortless.... ... Though the "good" wins in "The Wild, Wild West," there is no sense that the good is that much different from or even safer than the bad.
The basic plot of two "secret service" operatives up against a mad genius who is kidnapping all the best scientists in order to take over the world, is a melodramatic plot which could have been a clever and humorous experience.
