the underdog sports movie, the teenage girl coming-of-age tale -....Meanwhile, the characters are likable enough in this movie, but watered-down.....Whip It" isn't a terrible movie, it's just so disposable.....Whip It" even fails to make us care about the climactic showdown.....Even the most predictable sports movies usually get us to hold our breath a bit as the underdog tries to stage the big upset.... ... Kristen Wiig, typically zany and awkwardly funny, takes on a more subtle role....while all the same creating cringe-worthy scenes of insult and injury.....An outstanding directorial debut from Barrymore, "Whip It" is a film that works on nearly every level.....Jimmy Fallon has his ephemeral moments as a derby announcer, and the sweet-faced Alia Shawkat is quite enjoyable as Bliss's best friend Pash.....It's a classic tale of one breaking out of their shell.... ...
