Daphne also instantly meets a handsome boy (Oliver James) who's perfect for her, and she ably defies the mean gold digger (Anna Chancellor) engaged to her dad.
That's epitomized by a hilarious scene in which he dons leather pants to play air guitar before a mirror.

In short, as fluffy fairytale movies go, What A Girl Wants is undoubtedly cheesy but still pretty enjoyable and should be a decent hit with its target audience.
The supporting cast are equally good Firth can do this sort of thing in his sleep, but he genuinely puts the effort in and clearly enjoys the scenes where he gets to loosen up a bit.

Any truly good movie, however, is able to transcend sex and age barriers so that it can be enjoyed by just about anyone with an open mind.
At this point, any thinking viewer will know where everything is headed, and so when the movie continues to hem and haw around, throwing on one tearful confrontation and false ending after another, all it manages to do is frustrate.
