Peter Bogdonavich's sendup of wacky screwball comdedies of the 30's is perfectly realized here, AND he struck comic gold with the hilarious pairing of Streisand/O'Neal. Their chemistry is excellent, and Miss Streisand has never looked lovlier with her long blond mane... Full review

Believe me, this movie is as funny as it sounds.
The supporting members of the ensemble cast are all wonderful.
Austin Pendleton and Mabel Albertson, as well as the always-hilarious Madeline Kahn, are particular standouts.

The pace of the film is quicker than a fast thing in a hurry but Bogdanovich balances out the screwball antics with some nicely understated character comedy: the hotel manager, and the judge in the final reel for example.
Caught up in the mandatory mayhem are absent minded musicologist Ryan O'Neal and wild eccentric Barbara Streisand (whom one unkind critic compared to a cross between an albino rat and an aardvark).

A screwball comedy is generally characterized by its implausible story line, its fast-moving dialogue, its wisecracking leads (usually a pair of lovers from opposite backgrounds), and its supporting cast of colorful, comical characters.
The plot is appropriately screwball.

Fortunately, Bogdanovich is incapable of making a truly bad film, so there is still enough to go around, the parts of the film that are funny holding up pretty well to repeat viewings.
That's taking in quite a lot of territory for so short a work, which may be part of the film's problem.
