This is Benegal's next venture after his surprise hit Welcome To Sajjanpur which appealed to both the niche and the masses and also did well at the box office.
We have to to wait to see if Abba Ka Kuan repeats the success of Welcome To Sajjanpur .

Shyam Benegal may be best known for intense films, but as you watch Welcome to Sajjanpur , it dawns upon you that he's equally proficient when it comes to light entertainers.

Ila Arun is perfectly cast and Divya Dutta is brilliant in a small role as the tomboyish and modern girl.
Amrita Rao is gracefully restrained - a far cry from her whimpering ways in mainstream masalas, she gracefully gets under the skin of the naive, unsure Kamla.

All-powerful actors, short on language sense, even get their lines tailored to suit their convenience, and lyricists and scriptwriters are only too willing to give in to their demands.
The multiplex syndrome is so powerful that film-makers don't want to risk offending their potential metro audiences even if the film's story has nothing to do with a big city.

Laughter surely is the best medicine and veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal's 'Welcome to Sajjanpur' is definitely successful in giving his viewers this medicine in the correct dosage.
Benegal, who is better known for serious issue-based films, has taken a turn into the comedy genre of filmmaking and deserves a thumbs up for it.
