Plot 2
Character Sketch

Anupam Kher as Harishchandra

A very successful man in all ways that matter, Harishchandra is a Delhi based business magnate with a family that is the center of his universe. Cultured and well traveled, he is also very rooted and humble. A very wise man, he believes that marriage, at the right time and to the right person, makes a person complete and gives meaning to his life. He is the reason Prem meets Poonam for the first time.

Aloknath as Krishna Kant

A resident of a small town, Madhupur, Krishna Kant is a simple, content man with a heart of gold. Having adopted his niece Poonam when she was orphaned at a young age, he has showered her with love and considers her his elder daughter. There is an old world charm in his life- a house in the crowded by-lanes of his hometown, a wholesale fruit business run in the gaddi style, and a muneem to boot. When its time for Poonam to get married, he leaves no stone unturned.

Seema Biswas as Rama

Krishna Kants wife, Rama is silently resentful of Poonam because of her famed beauty and charm. She also resents the fact that her husband is willing to spend his entire lifes savings on Poonams wedding. A practical woman, her sole concern in life is finding the right groom for her beloved daughter Choti. A woman of few words, she can be very harsh sometimes. Fond of Hindi literature, she is neatness and efficiency personified when it comes to household chores.

Amrita Prakash as Rani Choti

The diametrical opposite of Poonam, Choti is the quintessential tomboy, full of energy and vivacity. Her life revolves around Poonam, whom she loves unreservedly. Dusky complexioned, she is the despair of the mother, who wants her to give up her wildness and apply mudpacks and become a demure, fair damsel, so that her Prince Charming can fall in love with her and take her into a beautiful new world.

Samir Soni as Sunil

The responsible elder son of the house, Sunil is ably supporting his father in business. A shy and reticent man, he is very happy with his newspapers when not at work. He is very fond of his younger brother Prem, a little boy lurks somewhere behind his quite reserve, and his wife Bhavnaa does not lose any opportunity to tease the boy out in the open.

Lataa Saberwal as Bhavna

Sunils wife and the elder daughter-in-law of the family, Bhavna is a joyful, exuberant and spirited woman who has carved an indelible place for herself as the lady of the house through her goodness. She gets along famously with Harishchandra, is Prems confidante and the balancing force in her reserved husbands life.

Manoj Joshi as Bhagatji

A jeweler by profession and a common family friend of Harishchandra and Krishna Kant, Bhagatji plays cupid in Prem and Poonams life. Hes instrumental in bringing the two families together. A happy-go-lucky person, he spreads warmth wherever he goes.

Ameya Pandya as Rahul

Rahul, Sunil and Bhavnas bright-eyed year-old son, is the proverbial apple of his familys eye. His penchant for asking the right questions at the wrong time lead to many embarrassingly funny moments. A lovable, naughty rogue, with the inherent innocence of childhood, hes the sunshine of the house.

Storyline

Prem (Shahid Kapoor) may be an eligible bachelor but he is not yet ready for marriage. He agrees to meet Poonam (Amrita Rao) just to please his dad (Anupam Kher) and finds a woman he can really grow to love.

An awkward, formal exchange of words grows into a deep, meaningful conversation as Prem and Poonam soon discover that they are soul mates. Poonam, an orphan, has grown up in a small town, where her Chacha (Alok Nath) has brought her up to want for nothing. Chachi (Seema Biswas), however, is jealous of Amrita's beauty, simplicity and charm, as her own daughter Rajni (Amrita Prakash) is overshadowed. Gentle, softspoken Prem, the scion of one of Delhi's most prosperous business houses, has grown up living in the fast lane, but retains his respect for family traditions and values. The two hit it off and soon they are engaged. They are to be married in six months.

Prem and Poonam now enter the most magical and romantic time of their lives. Six months fly by. Just when everything is set for the wedding a crisis puts their love through a trial by fire.

Vivah is a heart warming tale of unconditional love. The golden period between engagement and marriage is every couple's fondest memory; and the unexpected encounter which deepens into love is something all young people will be able to relate to.
