WICKED OLD MAN
Jun 15, 2008

Venus is a film about endings, the end of youth, the end of beauty and the end of life, however one is wise to accept such endings and realize that our prime time has passed. In Venus Maurice seems to live... Full review

OK, so there's profanity and some truly off-color content, but this is one of greatest little movies ever made. Truly. Peter O'Toole is mind-boggling spectacular. It seems a lot of user reviews reflect they didn't really "get" the film. See it... Full review

I don't get it...I just don't get it. I'm no conservative but this movie is sick. An old man lusting after a 14 year old girl? It was disturbing & disgusting...and not much pushes me to that limit. Not good... Full review

Characters and story are vile. Aging degenerate has no appeal. Self absorbed youth has no foundation for her supposed change. She should have kept disgusting us by her indulgence to precipitate an early exit from the theatre.... Full review

O'Toole's great acting performance came when he promoted this horrible film. I paid $8 bucks when I could have rented Lawrence of Arabia for $3 and saved $5. The only emotion I felt was his scene with his ex-wife played by... Full review

Peter O'Toole is indeed still in the game. What a masterwork performance by one of the great actors of the last fifty years. This is as great a movie as many of the critics claimed Lost in Translation to be. Like... Full review

While I was enthralled with the acting of the entire cast, Peter O"Toole's performance was exceptional. Yet, the content was quite relevant to my own experience and that was what moved me so deeply. I am starting to experience my own... Full review

frankly my dear i don't give a damn. There was some amusing dry humor; Vanessa Redgrave was flawless. In the end, though, it was about O'Toole and the other over the hill actors hamming it up. you've got to be in... Full review

But it's O'Toole's show, and the grand old actor gives a performance without a hint of grandness, except where it might fit. Peter O'Toole adds another Great One to his list of indelible performances: as Maurice, a frail but defiantly horny London actor in his sunset, O'Toole lays bare his weathered face and sophisticated soul for a marvelous portrait of mortality. ... Naturally, for a character drama to work, you must have the best possible cast, and certainly "Venus" qualifies on that count. In "Venus" O'Toole plays Maurice Russell, an aging actor who has been, as he says, "a little famous," a womanizer, too, now tired and ailing, with a handful of old cronies like himself for company. ... Acting is paramount in a film of this sort, and Venus does not disappoint. Maurice relishes the female companionship -- even if it's compromised by the fact that Jessie, whom he nicknames "Venus," largely humors his salacious impulses. ... Full Review
