Because of that, A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT is a successful genre combination of a war film, period romance, detective story and black comedy.
The plot of Japrisot's novel served as an opportunity for Jeunet to show that he could handle light-hearted and disturbing material in the same film.

Presented in a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, "A Very Long Engagement" looks absolutely beautiful on DVD.
Both a surprisingly intriguing mystery and a deeply moving portait of a country and people shattered by war, "A Very Long Engagement" is one of those few films whose powerful performances and imagery linger for days afterwards.
