Tragic

Despite being panned, I had hope that this film might be a fulfilling experience. The main problem with 'Umrao Jaan' is that it insists upon itself. It tries hard to be taken seriously, ergo, the script seems to be written... Full review

I feel the movie requires a closer look. Superficially the scenes mite come out dry but look closer and you will see the reality that is staring you in your face. there is not adulteration of scenes by strong music..... Full review

Poor Aishwariya Rai. To have had to suffer the indignity of being "the most beautiful woman in the world." It may sound like I'm being excessively sarcastic, but you're only half right. Rai, like many other actors before her, has... Full review

I saw the original movie when I was 10 back in 1982. Remakes of a successful film are always difficult because to many they will never live up to ones expectations. This one by JP Dutta was a great effort.... Full review

After a long wait, J.P. Dutta's remake of Umrao Jaan is finally out and it's definitely worth the wait. Beautiful cinematography, exquisitely choreographed mujras (dances), and wonderful performances highlight this excellent film. In particular, Aishwarya Rai gives an amazing performance... Full review

First and foremost, I appreciate Dutta's good intentions of exposing today's generation to the beauty of Urdu Zabaan and Lakhnawi Tehzeeb. It takes courage to do an Urdu film, in an age where Hinglish is fast becoming the linguafranca of... Full review

I've just seen this fantastic movie (twice in the theater), and the complaints I've heard about it completely escape me. It makes me wonder if they watched the entire movie, as the ending scenes are among the best ever filmed.... Full review

There are less reasons for why you should not watch Umraao Jaan than why you should watch. If you're looking for a movie with heart, then this is the one. In a rush of making comic, action and exotic foreign... Full review

In one of the countless visuals of stunning resonance, Aishwarya, playing the doomed and poetic tawaif (courtesan) Umrao Jaan Adaa, travels through a burning field of crops. Umrao Jaan is remarkable for recreating the rhythms of a charming though lost culture through the pacy movements of the tawaifs feet, though the choreography does restrict the Aishwaryas swan-like agility. ... Clearly this story has all the hallmarks of a grand tragedy, but under J.P. Dutta's leaden direction, Umrao Jaan never registers a pulse. The film opens with an awkward framing device that finds an elderly Umrao Jaan narrating her life story to a neighbor who has come to visit her. ... Full Review

Yet the lush and splendor does not overshadow the story of Umrao Jaan. It depends on what bent of mind you have to appreciate a movie like J.P. Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan'. Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Himani Shivpuri are very natural in their performances. ... Full Review

To begin with, the film is like an ornate canvas sprinkled with colourful art work. But what works against the film is its inordinate length and a certain plastic feel to the milieu. ... Full Review
