I bought this on both the name of Petty and Bogdanovich. Alas I didn't think Bogdanovich did as best as he could. Why for example include extracts from the "Gainesville Concert" in the two narrative DVD's when they are already on... Full review

Tom Petty is one of those 'institutions' if one could call it in rock and roll, though maybe that's too harsh a word to put on a man like Petty, who looks about as relaxed and laid back as a multi-millionaire... Full review

...but a late innings entry to the film made it impossible. I realize Jim Ladd was the inspiration behind the title of Petty's pretty decent but still flawed The Last DJ concept album, but Ladd's hippie-drippy whining about Ronald Reagan's deregulation... Full review

I've always loved Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but like many casual fans, I had a tendency to underrate them. This 3 1/2 hr documentary should go a long way to putting them up there where they belong in the rock... Full review

The documentary includes tons of great music. From his childhood in Gainesville Florida in the 1950s to the band's 30 Anniversary concert, Bogdanovich trains his camera not only at what made the Heartbreakers' music so great, but what made the artists behind that music so real and human. ... What makes Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers so remarkable is the sheer volume of hits they've managed to crank out since their debut in 1976 (the Stones haven't had a hit song since the '80s) and how wonderfully timeless they still sound to this day. One of Petty's signature songs talks about not backing down, and 32 years in, he's far from it and I wouldn't be surprised if Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are still going strong for another 32 years to come. ... This album also solidifies Petty's place as perhaps the premier crafter of great driving music.....He also always been the one who consistently articulated the small-town, Southern-fried view of life present in all of the band's best songs..... ... Full Review
