Enjoyed it, but it could have been better.

I suggest to all that you should see the film without thinking much about the plot, because it's not well defined here. That said, the character interaction between Eddie and his family should not be missed. David Wenham does a fantastic... Full review

The film recounts at a very slow pace events in the life of a chemical engineer. He's down on his luck from beginning to end. Each day brings new problems. The musical score ever so dreary heightens the pessimistic atmosphere. David... Full review
a non-Australian (and puzzled) response

I found this film, despite the very attractive performance by David Wenham, to be quite puzzling, as it was difficult to decipher precisely what the filmmaker was up to. Was it a moral fable, divorced from the real world? (Thus Amanda,... Full review

I so wanted to be positive about this film, but to be honest I cannot. Its just one of those films which leaves you, ultimately, totally dissatisfied. Just what was it all about? Its a film where nothing happens but at... Full review

I saw "Three Dollars" today, on a bleak Canberra day. It was not the best Australian movie I have ever seen (my heart belongs to "Picnic at Hanging Rock"). But it was the kind of movie that Australians ought to make... Full review

After reading most of the positive reviews and extended cinema release of this film I decided to see it tonight. I was hopeful and just like Somersault, when all the reviewers and company jumped on the bandwagon sprouting its wonders (forgetting... Full review
An entertaining modern fable

Although it has been suggested that "Three Dollars" is about the mind of the Australian Male, Melbourne version, (such as it is), it really could be set in almost any large Western city. Eddie (David Wenham), a genial thirty-something, works for... Full review

There are many things to appreciate about Robert Connolly's Three Dollars, but the film could have been much better if it was dealt better with what I'd call its 2 main problems. These problems are: the unnecessary length of the film... Full review

THREE DOLLARS is an adaptation by director Robert Connolly and author Elliot Perlman of Perlman's successful novel and it's a character-driven piece made with intelligence and wit. I think it was great getting Frances O'Connor back here for this. ... Full Review

Three Dollars is a solid Australian drama;....there were some superfluous scenes that could have easily been trimmed from the cut, which would have made dramatically stronger.....But there's more to this movie than cheap laughs, that's for sure.....it all boils down to one scene where he dances convulsively to Joy Division's 'Transmission' in a Melbourne underground club circa 1983.....But Robert Connolly is one of the few Australian directors to successfully straddle arthouse cinema and commercial filmmaki ... Like wise for us, but the film is engaging and a pleasure to watch, especially the first half. Frances O'Connor shows once again her range and her depth as Tanya, while the tiny, sweet little Joanna Hunt-Prokhovnik is a terrific find. ... Full Review
