Although the subject matter is depressing, there's redemption in the end. Add the bonus of excellent top-notch acting by both Halle and Benicio, and this was a very, very, good movie. Even Duchovny was excellent and believable in his small role.... Full review

Yet the acting is so good, one can forgive some of the film's shortcomings.....Benicio Del Toro is superb as the drug-addled Jerry Sunborne.....Moviegoers aren't really keen on watching seriously heavy, overly dramatic slice-of-life films, no matter who's starring in them....Even the movie's title, based on an occurrence mentioned in the story but clearly intended metaphorically, seems contrived.....undermine the story's credibility..... ... Allan Loeb's screenplay is not bad, by any means....the scenes showing happy families in flashback are not worthy of Bier.....It is a masterful performance....it has weaknesses that make it an average film, not something special.....David Duchovny's performance as Brian, who we meet in flashback, is key to the story's integrity..... ...
