Taut direction and good acting from Joaquin Phoenix, James Caan, and Faye Dunaway make this a memorable film. Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron are too young and inexperienced to carry off their roles, , but their is a cameo by singer... Full review

A much more complex and interesting film noir than it seems.

What is interesting about Grey's picture is the use of understatement to emphasize the complexity of negotiated relationships in the New York world where mob business and city administration intersect. Wahlberg's comparative lack of expressiveness suits his role as a... Full review

Phoenix and Theron were but young actors in 2000 and they were teamed with some seasoned folks as Caan, Dunaway and Burnstyn. So naturally, who gets to take their cloths off, even if they are not closeups. Phoenix's butt shot is... Full review
Too much plot, not enough time

The cast and acting in this crime/drama is great, but the actors are let down by a melodramatic script that is too busy. "The Yards" is a character-driven story, but the problem is that the script has too many subplots... Full review

The Yards is simply one of those classic movies rare to find these days. Unfortunately it hasn't achieved much success (At least in my country), and that's a crying shame. I really can't see why, because it's got everything that... Full review

The Yards" manages to build genuine tension with all the makings of a great film -- a strong premise, a phenomenal cast, and a gifted director. The Yards" is, without a doubt, a good movie, but with a general premise that has been done before and done better , being merely 'good' might not be enough to cut it. ... Full Review

The movie is fairly predictable and towards the end a trifle perfunctory. But there's no glamorous varnish on the events, the mood is doom-laden (the score includes a version of 'Saturn' from Holst's Planet Suite) and a formidable cast bury themselves in their unglamorous roles. ... Full Review

It is an absorbing subject, even if the first-rate cast seems to be held in check by director and co-writer James Gray's low-key, unrelenting naturalism. The shadows extend to the makeup-darkened eyelids of Charlize Theron, who brings tough-girl good looks to the role of Phoenix's girlfriend. ... Full Review
