The problem, he said, was that The Wicker Man was sold as a straight-up horror movie even though neither it nor the original film actually was.
Because he has written so much for the stage, he has been more comfortable taking chances on film: adapting a novel (A.S. Byatts Possession"), remaking a 70s cult film ("The Wicker Man") or directing screenplays he didnt write ("Nurse Betty, Lakeview Terrace").

The 1973 original's X certificate (slapped on it for its brooding, reap-what-you-sow nihilism) was downgraded to a mallrat-friendly 12A (The Wicker Man and the words "contains moderate horror" a contradiction in terms).

That is the most important flaw the filmmakers made.
