Skip this Hollywood version, a real piece of garbage. A cheap insult to the brilliant original "Spoorloos", or by the English title also called "The Vanishing". It completely misses the mark in typical, grotesque Hollywood fashion, usually due to a bunch... Full review

The most controversial moment in the original film, that scene is also duplicated in the new version, which works even better the second time around, because you can see how skillfully Haneke is toying with the viewer. Whenever blood is shed, Haneke always cuts away from the act, depicting only the emotional suffering and agony felt by the other characters in the film as one of their loved ones is harmed. ... The Vanishing packs the greatest punch in its first half, with a very engaging beginning that will hook viewers quite solidly into the storyline. The second half of the film is perhaps a bit softer, but given that The Vanishing is briskly paced (with a running time of 109 minutes) there's fortunately little opportunity for the film to sag, and viewers will walk away from the film feeling satisfied, if perhaps a little uneasy about letting their loved ones out of their sight... ... Under the Sand opens with an eerie and appropriate homage to George Sluizer's The Vanishing . Although the film's center provides a bit of a lull, and the ending seems unnecessarily bleak, this is a fine film worthy of repeat viewings. ... Full Review

The Vanishing is a brilliant, well-crafted psychological thriller in the truest sense, and its presentation on DVD from Criterion is nearly as free of flaws as the film itself. Though the name 'Criterion' most often is associated with a slew of supplemental material, this relatively featureless disc offers such an excellent film and spectacular video quality that it's hard to feel disappointed at the lack of extras. ... Starring Kiefer Sutherland and Jeff Bridges, the remake of The Vanishing , especially its awkward and tacked-on happy ending, highlights everything that is brilliant and disturbing about the original. The Vanishing is perhaps most disturbing in how it depicts the methodical, exacting nature of evil. ... Full Review
