After six months of relentless advertising for this film I was expecting a blockbuster in every sense of the word but I am here to inform you that Spirit is a dud. There is a lot of uproar about comic films but I personally love them. Now that we have all the right technology to make these films why not make them all? The problem is at some point Hollywood decided if a film is going to be visually appealing it no longer needs to be intellectually or emotionally appeasing.
Spirit is lame from the first frame. It starts off with our hero (Gabriel Macht) mud wrestling with his arch nemesis Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), and never recovers. One of the biggest problem with the film is the concept is outdated. The 1940’s comic book seems lame in comparison to our modern day gritty Batman and recovering alcoholic Ironman. Frank Miller failed at his first solo go at directing. Let’s hope he does better with Buck Rogers.
Stay home for this one folks and if you really have to see the train wreck wait until you can rent it and watch it at home. With all the other great blockbusters out right now don’t waste your time on this one.
Frank Miller definately does a good job bringing a comic book feel to this movie but from my standpoint, I am not a comic book fan so it became hard to follow at times. I think Samuel L Jackson took the role over the top. I think he was a bit much!
I love this movie. It would definatly be one that I would watch over and over again. It reminds me a lot of Sin City. I know it has the same creator, but that's what makes it great. The use of certain colors makes parts of the characters and story line to stand out. It made me want to not even get up to use the bathroom. I didn't want to miss any part of the movie. Simple colors with a hypnotic effect. It isn't true to the original comic book story line, but I liked it more than the comic. Watching this movie made me want to get online and find the comic to read it. I found small differences. Nothing that looked like it was rewrote, just certain things that didn't matter. The Spirit is a beyond the grave action packed movie. He has the determination and power of anyone seeking revenge against the bad guys.
I'm going to say it again: Frank Miller is GOD. Everything he touches rules. I think he's done it again with The Spirit. With the way the whole movie looked I was reminded in many ways of Sin City. And Samuel L. Jackson...in yet another movie? Never thought I'd see him pop up in a comic book movie. But anyways...point being is this: see this movie if you get the chance. I won't say anything about the plot line other then it's good.
I've been waiting quite a long time for the release of this movie. I was a big fan of the Frank Miller graphic novel, and I was not at all disappointed with the final product. It was a fun time at the movies for me that didn't really let up. The acting in the movie was fun, though a bit cheesy. I didn't mind though. What impressed me the most was the art direction of the movie. I think they certain captured the mood and look of the comic book with their super stylized shooting of this movie. So many shots were just incredibly impressive to me. I'd recommend this one to anyone who loves having their mind in the gutters.
When i heard that this movie was coming out, my father immediately wanted all of us to watch it together because it reminded him of his childhood. Another comic book comes to life on screen. This movie was really good, and the graphic were awesome. Many people are complaining because it is another comic book movie, but these movies are taking us back in time and bringing the past back to life. I love Samuel Jackson but i felt like he could of played his role better. They perfectly captured the style of the comic book of this movie. It was a good movie overall.
I really WANTED to like this... But...

I really wanted to like this but the main actor who played the Spirit was just plain awful. And everyone acting was dreadful, the writing is dreadful and the direction is dreadful. Maybe Frank Miller wanted that actors to Over act... Full review
We have to remember that this is a comic book movie come to life...many people are complaining that they keep doing this, but if you don't like them...don't watch them. I thought that this movie was not that great in comparison to other comic book movies even ones done by Frank Miller. however I did find that I liked the style and the graphics a lot. I wasn't to happy with the acting, I felt that it could have been cast better. and i'm a little tired of Samuel L. Jackson...just putting that out there There was a lot of potential but I feel overall it was poorly executed. I give it 2 1/2 stars because while it wasn't great, it was still somewhat entertaining.
The Spirit is yet another return to the style that made Sin City so popular. A movie like this is tough to mess up due to it’s visual artistic style. Yet, Frank Miller finds a way to do it. This “Spirit” just doesn’t have the same spirit.
Unfortunately it seems that the overall gimmicky style of the movie was allowed to overshadow the fact that no matter the cool style, a film needs to also have the substance to hold it up.
It is almost painful to watch such valuable movie making tools go to waste. The performances are dry and the movie never connects.
The best plan for this movie, since it is so visually appealing, is to cut the sound and play it in a digital picture frame on the wall as just a visual piece of art.
The Spirit
I thought the comic book turn movie craze was coming to an end with Iron Man, but with the release of “The Spirit” I think that we are doomed to see more of these movies. Unfortunate for the movie’s director, Frank Miller, the comic book classic does not resonate on screen the same way it does in print. Some comics should remain a part of our childhood imaginary adventures, others have had great success when put in the theatres but I do not see a box office hit with this movie. The star studded cast could not resuscitate this dead movie back to life.
