There is simply no excuse for actors not doing their homework on a movie. I could barely get past the cover shot on the video- Hester and Dimmesdale making out like they're on a playground. Hello, people, these are puritans, operative... Full review

The only major problem with this version of the Hawthorne classic that I have is the extremely ultered ending. The acting was good, got to love Gary Oldman, direction good, etc. However, if you have ever read the book and received... Full review

This was simply a crime of a movie. Gary Oldman's excellent acting couldn't even save it. I read Hawthorne's book 4 years before this was made, he probably rolled over in his grave!... Full review

For my point of view "The Scarlet Letter" is a good film with great performances… All the actors do a superb job… I was worried that Demi Moore might not have the range to handle the role of Mistress Prynne,... Full review

Who do these people think they are? Do they think they can improve on the plotline of Nathaniel Hawthorne, the master storyteller? The original plot in the book ended in a hugely dramatic climax. Instead they settle for some sort of... Full review

If this movie were original it would be only fair to mediocre, but claiming its based on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel is insulting. I hear the ads for this movie say its based 'freely and liberally' on the book. Well, this... Full review

This movie is great! Gary Oldman is soooo handsome, and he does a great job acting. Kudos to Demi Moore and Robert Duvall too. Though it doesn't quite follow the Hawthorne version (ahem, ahem, the end) it's a wonderful storyline and... Full review

Perhaps The Scarlet Letter isn't the worst of them of courseno apparent anachronisms in a historical costume dramabut it certainly doesn't make up for an all-around lousy movie The worst, without a doubt, is the Demi Moore version from 1995. ... Full Review

Like the moral climate of the Massachusetts colony it depicts, this "Scarlet Letter" is equal parts piety and hysteria. When this film's opening titles read "freely adapted from," they are not being excessively modest. Art director Tony Wollard. ... Full Review

You know you have a bad movie when Gary Oldman gives the best performance and Robert Duvall gives the worst, which is precisely the case in this latest and most ridiculous adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's oft-filmed "The Scarlet Letter. As the film opens, feminist-before-her-time Hester Prynne (played by a horribly miscast Demi Moore) arrives in Puritan New England with a chip on her shoulder. ... Full Review

This is a well-acted, beautiful movie. Taking great liberty with Hawthorne's Roger Chillingworth, ``the leech,'' or doctor, Duvall is torn between the primitive and the fervently religious. OLDMAN GOES ROMANTIC Oldman is the film's greatest asset. ... Full Review
