If there is one thing to recommend about this film is that it is intriguing. The premise certainly draws the audience in because it is a mystery, and throughout the film there are hints that there is something dark lurking... Read more at imdb.com

I couldn't give this film a bad rating or bad review for two reasons: Robin Williams and Toni Collete. The film has the potential of being a thriller and there are some slight disturbing elements that lean to the psychological... Read more at imdb.com

This Night Listener is better than people are generally saying. It has weaknesses, and it seems to be having a genre identity crisis, no doubt, but I think its creepy atmosphere and intriguing performances make up for this. The whole... Read more at imdb.com

Seattle Post-Intelligencer
The story, based on a true incident (as novelized by Armistead Maupin), is morbidly seductive and its mystery keeps you hooked each step of the way.
And when he journeys to small-town Wisconsin to have a face-to-face meeting with the boy, it becomes an epic quest with endless obstacles and frustrations in its path, most of them generated by the social worker (Toni Collette) who claims to have adopted Pete.

Its rare to find a summer film that is as quiet and as steadfast as The Night Listener .
Make sure you try to see The Night Listener at a time and a venue that is unlikely to be populated with restless teenagers because any heckling or superficial chatter will certainly disrupt the frighteningly eerie mood that the film creates.

However, despite the fantastic performances and the good plot, the films mystery unravels in a mostly very benign and incoherent fashion.
Robin Williams , as with many of his more recent films, continues his much-underrated skill for drama with a great performance as Gabriel.

Combustible Celluloid
In a normal thriller, "obsessed" is a keyword for ramping up the suspense, but The Night Listener refreshingly continues along its same dreamy path.
However, thanks to Maupin and Williams, The Night Listener eventually rights itself and comes out well, leaving us with the feeling that we've become lost in a story, and that the teller enjoyed the telling more than reaching the end.

Gabriel's amateur sleuth-fest, which comprises the bulk of the film, is silly and predictable, and highlights just how underdeveloped both Williams' and Colette's roles are, as well as their inability to fully inhabit them.
Maupin's own long-distance friendship with a sexually abused boywho may or may not have actually existedmade for a morose and fairly creepy book that was hardly ideal movie material.
