Released in theaters without advance screenings, The Last Legion may not score any points for originality, narrative sweep, or pulse-pounding excitement, but it's a decent bargain matinee or DVD rental.

Put yourself in the proper boy's-adventure mindset and "The Last Legion's" corny moments will just add to the charm.
An old-school sword-and-sandal spectacle on an almost-epic scale, "The Last Legion" is such a square and diligent piece of entertainment that it put me in a nostalgic mood for the honest B-pictures they don't make anymore.

Sounding more weary than wise, Ambrosinus ( Ben Kingsley ) observes mist rising from a gloomy horizon and pronounces, "The legend begins beneath these dark hills.
He brings his super-team -- an unexpectedly multi-culti crew that includes a large black man, Batiatus (Nonso Anozie), and an eager white kid, Demetrius (Rupert Friend), not to mention exotic, aggressive Mira (Aishwarya Rai).

The story is somewhat entertaining, the acting is just OK (no real stand-out performances), the cinematography is mediocre, the CGI animation is pretty terrible, and the plot is incredibly predictable (and sometimes cheesy).
The only reason it hit theaters is because it has some decent actors in it (namely Ben Kingsley and Colin Firth).
