The Ladykillers has all the cinematic invention these filmmakers are known for, and some great offbeat humour.
The comedy is broad, but the humour is thin.

This time out the Coen Brothers didn't waste any time at all and screwed up their latest effort, "The Ladykillers," from the get go.
This style of music pervades the film as T. Bone Burnett is going to impress the audience with the many authentic gospel songs he has researched for "The Ladykillers" soundtrack.

Enjoyment of this movie may very well depend on your mood on one hand....While most of these must have been stage slaps, there are moments when Wayans looks undeniably dazed.....It’s not a thoughtful film like Fargo or O Brother Where Art Thou.....their well of crazily fascinating characters appears far from dry.....But Professor Dorr, Gawain MacSam (Marlon Wayans), Garth Pancake (J.K. "Fargo" must be ranked among the best black comedies of all time.....So you'd think "The Ladykillers" would be right up their alley.....it's usually been in appropriately bawdy comedies, not in what should have been a quieter, more subdued farce.....He is totally out of place, his foul mouth never without a profanity..... ... Most of this setup, plus the introduction of the characters, takes up the first half of the movie, and, frankly, it is not very funny.
The second reason the film fails, however, is a more serious breach of judgment.
It's Wayans who's the problem.

At first, The Ladykillers looks to be the sort of antic, violent comedy for which the Coens are renowned, even beloved.
Alone among the merry band of brothers, Pancake has a sweetheart, Mountain Girl (the resourceful Diane Delano, who deserves better than this one-note role).
