Good old fashioned dark comedy
Nov 02, 2008

There's something about dreams that requires relaxation and patience. They have a certain fluidity about them that if they're hurried or rushed they just aren't as effective. As is fitting for a film about dreams, "The Good Night" works because of... Full review
Gary Shaller is at a crossroads in his life: his job is going nowhere, his wife, Dora, drives him crazy, and he passed his thirtieth birthday four years ago. Add to that his best friend Paul seems to become more successful... Full review
Pure Post-Kauffman Machinism

As said in the title,The Good Night's screenplay is a lot alike to Charlie Kauffman's screenplay. It has the same wicked plotline, yet the screenwriter doesn't truly know how to handle things as well as Kauffman and eventually falls into a classic mid-life... Full review
It's pretty obvious that first-time director/screenwriter Jake Paltrow was heavily inspired by Michel Gondry's surreal, off-kilter work in "The Science of Sleep" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in making this downbeat 2007 dramedy. Barely in theaters before heading... Full review
Romantic comedy???

No romance, no comedy. Bitter, mean characters who are completely unlikeable. That's about it. Completely depressing storyline and visuals. I'm still mystified by the romantic comedy label though.... Full review

I cannot believe how awful this movie is. I thought it might be a comedy with Danny DeVito in it, but the storyline was totally boring. Nothing in this movie is memorable just the fact that I stayed awake amazed me.... Full review
The movie is amazing on most levels. It's actually a vision into a manic depressed soul who sees a light at the end of the tunnel. The light is in the form of the dream girl Anna (Penelope Cruz, who is... Full review
Interesting, but not groundbreaking

I think enough has been said about the strengths and weaknesses of this movie, so I'm not intentionally going to add to that. I just for a change want to give a simple and highly personal opinion as a viewer,... Full review
Not bad, but victim to a classic blunder

Making a movie about dreams or dreaming is tough, and it shows in this one. The difficulty with dreams in any bit of fiction is that they can't be held accountable; that is, by definition, there isn't any kind of... Full review
Decent movie around a somewhat unsatisfying story.

I'm still not completely sure what this movie was exactly about. The initial layer suggests a story about an insecure bloke who tries to escape his run aground life through lucid dreaming. Real life and the dream world coincide as... Full review

Worse, though, is the soundtrack of cheesy music that feels overly saturated with sentiment and oddly incompatible with the mood or actions on-screen.....Even the scenes with Freeman and an overly restrained Danny DeVito (whose character feels so sedate that you think he's sedated) can't compare with these zesty moments in an otherwise dull dramedy..... ... A mildly enjoyable listen, Paltrow has some intriguing things to say....merely uses the concept as a façade to offer up some intriguing characters and a fascinatingly distinctive narrative.....A strange and strangely compelling dramedy, writer-director Jake Paltrow's first feature casts an eclectic group of actors that includes Simon Pegg, Gwyneth Paltrow, Penelope Cruz, Danny DeVito.... ... he has mobilised a formidable cast for this indulgent first feature film.....Paltrow does create one very good scene when Paul gets to meet the real-life Anna in a bar.....Gary is rich and successful, cheerfully giving the execs the shallow music they want;.... ... Full Review

We scarcely remember the glamorous figure of previous films.....This is the set-up of Jake Paltrow's reflective....Paltrow's debut, though it has some good moments, falls away into nothing very much in the end..... ... Full Review

The evening's extreme predictability helped hurt my final score on Oscar predictions, where I ended up with a dismal 15 out of 24. Absent the usual suprises in the acting categories, I was wrong about Meryl Streep upsetting Kate Winslet... ... Full Article

I have read many reviews about 'The Long Good Night' and each reviewist does not seem to get what the film is all about. They expect to love each character as if they were the most likeable people in the... ... Full Article

Dreamscapes and lonely hearts are served up with equal measure in "The Good Night," a peculiar and enchanting dramedy that exists in its own world of desire and representation. ... Full Article

While I hate to start chucking around charges of nepotism, I find it hard to believe that Gwyneth Paltrow would have signed up to this film were it not written and directed by her little brother Jake Paltrow. ... Full Article

When Gary creates Anna she's the perfect woman - sexy, willing, consoling, and the antithesis of shrewlike Dora (a caricatured lousy girlfriend if ever there was one), so it's easy for him to forsake real life to wallow in dreams. ... Full Article

Rating: "The Good Night" is a fake documentary about a washed-out rock star, Gary (Martin Freeman), who's so disenchanted with his disappointing life that he'd rather spend it asleep. ... Full Article
