I am always leery of seeing favorite novels turned into movies, it is just never how you imagined or invisioned and you will almost always leave disappointed. This is not the case with the Golden Compass, for once they got it... Full review

The opening scene was the very first clue that this film was going to be the barrage of formula drudgery that it ultimately turned out to be. Weitz began by unveiling all the information which the reader isn't even aware... Full review

In fact, they may be so enthralled with the intrigue and adventure of the film that they think of it as nothing more than a great movie about another world of make-believeassuming they are not scared by several intense scenes and some frightening characters.

Against all odds, the film succeeds in creating an environment where the appearance of these animals everywhere is taken for granted, and where the constant shape-shifting by the younger ones seems perfectly natural.
For the most part, the actors are perfectly cast in their roles, and the special effects are dazzlingly complex and rendered with just the right, casual touch, especially where the talking animals are concerned.
