In The Family That Preys, both the heroes and villains are divided evenly between black and white characters.
No, whether by accident or by design, Perry's newest inspirational film - which will be released Friday on his 40th birthday - is his first project with the potential to reach the white audience who make up the majority of moviegoers.

In more sympathetic roles, Henson, Dunbar and Perry give smooth performances (even if Dunbar is stuck playing one of the most clueless cuckolds in film history).
Bates is enjoyably larger-than-life, as the role requires.

While the new film does away with some of Perrys persistent problems with staging and jarring shifts in tone, it still has problems.
His direction remains lazily undistinguished, the heavenly glow he uses to light characters is hokey, and his sets look like theyre borrowed from a soap opera.
