One remake that managed to live up to its cheesy inspiration was Chuck Russell's version of The Blob, in which the title goo crashes to earth and promptly begins digesting the residents of a small California town while growing to gargantuan proportions. ... Full Review

But as the Blob grows -- a slimy, undulating Microbe-wave from Hell, as single-minded as the IRS -- the effects start regressing until, at film's end, they have much of the same chintzy "faked" look as the original. Conspiracy theorists will appreciate this, particularly for the way Russell blends such disparate sources as "E.T." and "C.H.U.D." The Blob' is just one such film and also has the pleasure of being hilariously dated. Add to that scenes such as an attack on a cinema (taken from the original) leading to a creepy sewer chase and the final attack at the town hall and you have one of the best directed 80's action flicks that more than stands the test of time. ...
