I'm a nanny and I took the little boy I work with to see this. Within the first 30 minutes they use the word 'crap' twice. The movie is also riddled with suggestive language... the love interests of the movie talking... Full review

Caught an early screening with my 5 year old son and a friend and his 7 year old son. We all loved it. Visually stunning, there are times you'd think it was live action if you didn't know penguins don't talk... Full review

Very enjoyable family feature with gorgeous animation, perfect voice work (especially by Jeff Bridges as Big Z, the aging surf guru) and a very cool documentary style storyline. If you're like me and were completely tired of penguin movies after March... Full review

It's fresh, fun and the animation is absolutely stunning.
The animation is so good that I wasn't sure if the water, waves and lush greenery on the island were CGI or not.

Occasionally clever, Surf's Up will no doubt please the audience for which it is intended, namely, younger viewers, as well as those who never get tired of cute animated anthropomorphic animal films that aim to entertain the whole family.
When everything you see is clearly not close to reality, as well as the dialogue mostly scripted for the voice actors, the fake documentary feel is lost, often seeming like an animated extreme sports reality TV farce.

Surf's Up" is even easier to grasp (especially the ESPN-ish presentation of the actual contest), and it has the attractions of a winning story and likable characters brought to life by unusually astute choices of matching voices.
Their mentor-student, wax-on/wax-off relationship is handled nicely, and is the real heart of the movie, although "Surf's Up" also provides Cody with a lifeguard love interest (Zooey Deschanel).
