Erin Brockovich follows his consistently impressive record of witty dialogue, offbeat, sometimes outrageous characters....If Erin Brockovich the movie seems a bit farfetched, we are shocked all the way through knowing....Soderbergh brilliantly directs a movie about victims of tainted water in constant, overbearing sunlight.....the attourney characters are too cliched....Steven Soderbergh's talent has never been questioned.... ... she's a gifted, intelligent actor.....it's also a clumsy and indifferent one.....The picture (which is based on real characters and events) is at its best as an American Pygmalion tale.....the early part of the movie is so good....These two make a delicious comedy team, communicating in shrewd looks and charging each other up for battle..... ... That's probably why "Erin Brockovich" is such a refreshing American movie, thanks to the fact....Combine that with the lack of any pontificating courtroom scenes....Helping that along is the casting of the brilliant Albert Finney in the lead male role.....Make no mistake this is a one-woman show with the entire movie resting on Julia Roberts who gives us her most interesting performance in years.....while Eckhart gives a good performance, the sub-plot feels thin and overly long..... ...
