Watching Showtime I got the impression that the producers got the idea to put Robert DeNiro and Eddie Murphy just for the sake of having a film that co-starred the two of them. Other than that I can't think of a... Full review

This was a pretty good modern-day comedy with straight man Robert De Niro doing a good job with comedy and Eddie Murphy just playing his normal whacked-out character. You get a good combination of humor and action in here. It... Full review

This is one of the funniest movies I have seen. During the whole movie, I was laughing about how Mitch Preston (robert DeNiro) was critisizing everything. He was the very good police officer, but a terrible actor. Trey Seller (Eddie Murphy)... Full review

It's not great, but it's not bad either. We all have our share of buddy cop movies. This one rates maybe right in the middle. The action isn't supreme, the comedy isn't horrificly hilarious, but it does what it has to... Full review

Speaking of the casting, the fun in having such opposites play opposites would have been to push the satire in the characterisations, too.
Instead, De Niro plays the stereotypical cop on his way to burn-out via a divorce and home pottery, all in a ramshackle apartment.

Even though I feared it being 48 Hours-lite, I really enjoyed Showtime (Warner Bros, Rated PG-13, DVD-$26.98 SRP).
The anamorphic DVD contains an audio commentary (with director Tom Dey, producer Jorge Saralegui and editor Billy Webber), the HBO First Look: The Making Of Showtime special, additional/extended scenes, and the theatrical trailer.

There are a few really funny moments in the film, but there are just as many painfully dull moments that seem to last forever, such as Murphy's interrogation scene in the jail.
The 5.1 surround track is especially impressive, given the film relies more on comedy than straight action.

Despite the been-there-done-that buddy cop storyline Showtime is highly entertaining cinema due entirely to the talents of the two leads.
The rather silly plot centers around a reality television series built around a very reluctant police detective played by De Niro and a very ambitious and hammy beat cop played by Murphy as his sidekick.
