There's one book I'm trying to option that could be very similar, story-wise, to Sherrybaby , but tone-wise it will be a lot more fun, if you can believe that.
Gaining recognition for her gritty documentary Nuyorican Dream in 1999, Collyer quickly began work on her first screenplay, Sherrybaby , to explore the deep-seeded issues of her past.

In Sherrybaby , Gyllenhaal plays a woman who has been in jail for three years, where she has kicked her heroin habit and hopefully gotten herself on the right track.
This is where Gyllenhaal probably gives her director the greatest gift.

It struck me while watching Sherrybaby that one of Maggie Gyllenhaal's greatest strengths as an actress is an ability to cross class lines effortlessly and often.
And yet Sherrybaby itself left me thinking more about Gyllenhaal's talent than the movie it was serving.
