'Scream 3 is certainly the worst film in the trilogy, but it's just not that bad of a horror movie, nor a dark comedy.
So, this movie didn't disappoint on that aspect anyway.

Scream 3 - going to great lengths to explain its completing the trilogy - is written by Ehren Kruger, not Kevin Williamson, and as a result is slower and sillier than its predecessors.
The avalanche of dull exposition is of no real consequence, and is full of illogical hooey, of herrings as red as blood, and of cardboard characters.

according to this movie trilogy, the original film sets the rules, the sequel BENDS the rules, and in the trilogy, it retells the story beginning to end, the way its supposed to.

Characters are constantly hearing noises in the distance that they venture to "check out", and there is a ludicrous amount of "let's split up" going on.

This film does have a number of parallels with "Wes Craven's New Nightmare," the first horror film in the genre to truly deconstruct the genre from within, but even for those who have seen "New Nightmare," Scream 3 is still a very enjoyable film.
While those hoping for a movie which greatly outdoes the earlier Scream films might be somewhat disappointed by the film, fans of the Scream series will still greatly enjoy this film.

Seen this way, Scream 3 marks a fitting end to the trilogy.
The fact that some of these tricks still make us jump is testament to Craven's expertise (honed through several decades in the slasher pic business).

I'm not saying that Scream 3 isn't a terrific movie - it's certainly as effective as its predecessors - it's just not better.
Nevertheless, I'm not complaining; I fully enjoyed Scream 3 , and so will anyone who liked the first two.

we see another skinny likable actress stuck in a flabby, tired sequel.....Since Cox Arquette's Gale is on hand as well, the casting, in theory, should be zestily playful:....we see a skinny likable actress stuck in a flabby, tired sequel....the film's precocious awareness of horror cliches doesn't extend to anything beyond the first two Scream films..... ... Like the first two movies, Scream 3 is clever in patches....A new killer arrives in each movie, justified with an instant backstory....Princess Leia, serves as a kind of patron saint of movie trilogies.....As far as plot devices go, Scream 3 is a successful recyling campaign, using the familiar cellphones, computer notes and dark, three-storey houses..... ...
