Film School Rejects
On the positive side of things, there are some rather tense moments in the film, but they're brief and often interrupted by a flashback or a meaningless rhetorical question raised to fill the audience in on what has happened. The fifth was a small step back in the right direction for the franchise and I'd say it was definitely better than IV and around the same level as II. ... Full Review

What I liked about this movie:....Unfortunately, this movie gets by on name only....It's sad how Hollywood will continue making sequels to good films in an effort to bleed you of every penny.....they lack the ironic twists I've come to expect.....I also liked how the movie ties up some lose ends from the other movies;.... ... There are some creative scenes, I especially liked the way they shot the cube trap, but this entry just didn't seem as creative as the others. Tobin Bell is suitably cunning as the master killer and game player and Costas Mandylor seems a bit more brutish than thoughtful as his replacement. ... Full Review

That's a conundrum any number of genre series have tackled--to varying degrees of success--and the problem facing the sadistic Saw films in its latest entry, Saw V . Saw V extends the premise by having disgraced detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor from the previous two films) don the pig mask to unleash horrific tortures on another group of seemingly unconnected strangers. ... DVD Talk
Basically, Saw V looks great, with nothing to complain about as far as compression artifacts or other digital tortures are concerned. The unrated Saw V cut ranks somewhere in the middle on the gore score, but its peaks and valleys structure - tension-filled trap sequence followed by lots of talk-talk where people try to explain what the hell is going on - lacks innovation. ... SAW V's simplistic narrative shines a light on just how boring the ongoing storyline is by now.....The creation of the pendulum, which is the focal point of the movie's best setpiece (and also results in its best blood 'n' guts), makes for a great watch as well..... ... Full Review
