There's a scene in "Run Fatboy Run" where Thandie Newton's Libby more or less baldly states that the basic outline is ridiculous - she's not going to dump her boyfriend and go back to the man who has disappointed her so much just because he runs a marathon. than any other website! It was expected that after nearly a decade on the blockbuster sitcom Friends, star David Schwimmer would have at least some sense of comedic rhythm. However, I never expected the guy to direct a British slapstick comedy. Five years ago Dennis (Simon Pegg) made a horrible decision: he left his pregnant fiance Libby (Thandie Newton) at the altar. Now a sad sack mall security officer with a smoking habit and 30 extra pounds, Dennis finds his life lacking, but refuses to do anything about it. This rather dismal plot is supplemented by yet another depiction of the 'boy who never grew up' as a smoking, drinking slob in a dead-end job who is always late to spend time with his son. This character archetype is becoming more and more offensive as time goes by - one wonders what the audience reaction would be if a woman were portrayed in this manner. The first half of the film also features dull 'visual comedy' including the always classic men's shower scene in which Dennis, instead of comparing himself to Whit in terms of career, clothing, car or...more

Just saw a preview screening. I thought that this was the funniest film I'd seen in ages. I love Simon Pegg and I found this one of his best performances. Simon Pegg plays Dennis, a man who has run away from all difficult decisions in his life. The marathon running stuff was really well handled - all sporting movie clichés avoided and sent up. There are lots of great moments - and the film resolutely avoided sentimentality. The supporting cast Dylan Moran, Hank Azaria etc were spot on.
If you want an...more

Official Site! Dennis Doyle (Pegg) is a security guard in a womans clothes shop and its been five years since he left his pregnant bride Libby (Newton) at the alter. Dont judge him too harshly as Dennis isnt really a bad man, its just that he like many modern men has a massive fear of commitment. In Dennis's case, his affliction is so chronic it keeps him from being able to see almost any task through successfully without screwing it up. Most people in America only know Brit Simon Pegg from his roles in director Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz or because they've seen pictures tagging him as the new Scotty in the Star Trek reboot, but the truth is he's starred in a great deal of crap since Shaun that you've probably never seen. Run Fatboy Run isn't the worst of these many movies, but you can bet that Pegg is glad he didn't have to rely on it instead of Shaun to introduce him to Americans. Pegg's Dennis is a nice guy, but you wouldn't think so from the film's prologue in which he freaks out and does a runner on his pregnant fiance Libby (Thandie Newton). Five years later, Dennis' life is noticeably worse, as he's living on his own and working as security guard at a women's shop, while Lindy has moved on, had their baby and is running a busy London bakery. Rating: PG-13 for some rude and sexual humor, nudity, language and smoking. Parents need to know that this amusing (if not particularly inventive) British romantic comedy includes a fair amount of swearing (though no words stronger than "s--t" and "pr--k") -- some in front of/directed at children. One kid even gives a grown-up the finger. There's also some random partial nudity -- one character likes to walk around naked below the waist, though viewers only see his backside -- and a fair amount of smoking and drinking (mostly in social situations). Families can talk about the appeal of "ugly duckling"...more

Though "Run Fatboy Run" is genial and often amusing, I can't help thinking it would have been funnier if a different combination of people had worked on it. Michael Ian Black (the writer), Simon Pegg (the star and co-writer), and David Schwimmer (in his theatrical directorial debut) are all funny guys, sure -- but they're each a different kind of funny. Black's humor tends to be surreal and odd (see TV's "Stella" and "The State"), while Pegg -- best known for co-writing and starring in the spoofs "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" -- favors subtlety and wordplay. While Iâll admit that Run Fatboy Run has itâs moments and a fair share of big laughs, itâs not recommendable due to the fact that there are more cliches than you can shake a stick at. I may have to reconsider that stance, however, now that Iâve seen Run, Fat Boy, Run twice. Thatâs not my normal operating procedure -- I rarely have the time or the opportunity to see a movie more than once before I review it. A wise man once noted that the caliber of a movie star (as opposed to just an actor) doesn't come with his or her best work, but in the mediocre films beneath them. Does a star keep you watching when you know exactly where the movie is headed? Does he hold your interest while navigating otherwise unremarkable plot twists? It's said that romantic comedy is the most predictable out of all the movie genres. I do believe this is true, but I don't think this is born out of a creative rut, but rather somewhat of a necessity. The fact is, they function primarily as a date movie first and a lasting work to remember second. But does that mean all romantic comedies are soulless and formulaic? Not necessarily. The trick is to meet all those necessary beats that we all know and expect, but fill the spaces between with wit and freshness. This is what many romantic comedies that...more

As I've long suspected, Simon Pegg and Asia Argento are birds of a feather: they both have a preternatural ability to enliven even the limpest of cinematic propositions. Simon Pegg stars as a hapless security guard who has remained friends with the mother of his child, even though he deserted her at the altar five years earlier. Problems arise when she finds a new friend who wants to marry her. The beautiful Thandie Newton and a very funny Hank Azaria round out the triangle. London becomes another character when the two men compete in a marathon around the city to impress Newton. A bit of fluff, the comedy is...more

un, Fatboy, Run is the type of romantic comedy apt to be described as "nice" or "sweet," both of which are codewords for "unexceptional" and "useless." Though it could have been helmed by any number of nondescript directors, it's Ross Gellar himself, David Schwimmer, who guides this tale from clichd start to clichd finish. As with Frank Oz's recent Death at a Funeral, Schwimmer's directorial debut is a faux-British import, recounting without an ounce of authentic UK spirit the London-set saga of Dennis (Simon Pegg), a loser who abandons pregnant Libby (Thandie Newton) at the altar and, five years later, attempts...more

Nicely balanced comedy about a chicken-hearted dolt, played by a perfectly cast Simon Pegg ( Shaun of the Dead), who abandons his fiance (Thandie Newton) at the altar. This chiefly involves him getting his protruding waistline under control by preparing for a marathon. Consistently funny stuff with some good, bumper-sticker messages about commitment-phobia, the film is well-directed by David Schwimmer from Friends, no less. Clearly keen to expand his CV, Schwimmer proves here to be a dab hand at delivering a constant stream of laughs without the impulse to impose any sort of stylistic signature whatsoever....more

Although I did enjoy the incongruity of the characters, this well-intentioned low brow co-production does not quite make it to the finish line. Finishing what you set out to do is what the film is about and David Schwimmer, who is known more for his acting skills, has surprisingly chosen this comedy with a quirky English tone for his first feature film. I won't make the obvious puns about Schwimmer being out of his depth (oops, just did), but the film lacks the light touch it needs. Talented Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) has co-written the screenplay and stars convincingly as Dennis,...more
