I love 70's cult cinema, and this is the best that there is. It's a good underground film that has its own audience. Very well acting, and highly entertaining. This is a film that influenced Quentin Tarantino.... Full review

Going into ROLLING THUNDER, I think I was expecting something with a little more of an exploitation-vibe to it. In actuality, this film is quite a bit deeper than your average sleazy revenge tale.Major Charles Rane comes home from Vietnam... Full review
Before I began this, I expected a "Death Wish" style action flick about a vigilante. I most likely watched it simply because it is one of Tarantino's all-time favorite films and I'm a sucker for 70s exploitation. I was pleasantly surprised... Full review
Intense, grim and powerful revenge/drama

In case you think "Death Wish" and "The Exterminator" were raw and disturbing post-Vietnam dramas handling about revenge, just wait until you see the totally obscure and sadly neglected "Rolling Thunder"! This movie has all the great trademarks of the... Full review

Boy, it's good to see a film one really likes that is just about unknown.....and read other reviewers who share your high opinion of that movie. That's the case here in this simple revenge tale. My attraction to this film, outside... Full review

I recently caught this semi-exploitative revenge flick on TV (Showtime), after wanting to see it for a while. Unfortunately, it's not on DVD and there's a good chance you're not going to find it on VHS (or laser disc) either,... Full review
A powerful revenge movie, sadly obscure.

Irving Warner - imdb.com
Screenplay of "Rolling Thunder" was co-written by Paul Schrader, who had just written "Taxi Driver". I feel this is William Devane's best movie, and a powerful start for Tommy Lee Jones. This is one dark movie, almost as dark as... Full review
Revenge, a dish best eaten cold

Robert J. Maxwell - imdb.com
This movie isn't nearly as bad as it might be, considering. Considering, that is, that the production values were low, the story is out of Revenge 101, and some other things. Paul Schrader had a hand in writing this, and... Full review

'Rolling Thunder' epitomizes to me what is great about 1970s movies. Just imagine this one remade today! It'd be a John Woo-esque shoot 'em up "action" blockbuster with slo mo explosions and a "hip" techno soundtrack! But we have here... Full review

The New York Times
William Devane plays a rare sympathetic role in Rolling Thunder , though his behavior is just as cold-blooded and sharkish as in any of his villainous assignments. Devane is cast as Maj. Charles Rane, a recently released Vietnam POW who is given a hero's welcome in his Texas hometown. ... Full Review

Channel 4 Film
Devane and Jones are outstanding. The town welcomes him like a hero, giving him a Cadillac convertible, a hooker called Linda (Haynes) and a silver dollar for every day of the eight years he spent in the jungle hell-hole. ... Full Review

William Devane plays a rare sympathetic role in Rolling Thunder, though his behavior is just as cold-blooded and sharkish as in any of his villainous assignments. Tommy Lee Jones co-stars as Rane's best friend, Johnny Vohden, who unquestioningly agrees to help Rane in his mission of revenge. ... Full Review
