Rize Up

This documentary is a hip investigation into the energy-filled movement of clowning/krumping in inner-city Los Angeles. I thought the soundtrack and its timing was invaluable along with drawing parallels to spiritual dances from "back in the day" and the seemingly inherent... Full review

The Clown Dancing and Krupming movement that came out of LA is fascinating, but this movie does not do it justice. I heard that this was originally a short, and transformed into a feature length movie after the short won awards... Full review

In my opinion, the only problem that anyone could possibly have with this movie is that it left you wanting a little more, like a cliff hanger. The footage is amazing, including the extended dance scenes in the DVD extras. The... Full review

This movie is a complete joke. It is sad when a form of epileptic seizure is called a dance art form. If caucasion people did this, people would think they were complete idiots. Since it is done by the supposed "underprivledged"... Full review

Rize makes the grade! A+ for Authentic!

Used this rare musical documentary as a teaching tool. The authenticity was compelling and convincing to a class of predominately white 8th graders who tend to think the 'streets, gangs, and drug world' are cool. Not anymore since they saw 'Rize'.... Full review

While Rize doesn't dig particularly deeply into its subject, LaChappelle has some success matching his editing to the fleetness of the performers (particularly in the climatic dance-off sequence) while still allowing them space to do their thing. There's a Collector's Edition worth of special features on the DVD including extended dance scenes, music video, press conference and audio commentary with David LaChapelle. ... Full Review

Time Out
Lachapelle's still photography is conspicuous for both heightened glamour and strong storytelling, neither of which is to the fore here. The smart, ambitious and compassionate characters who emerge in interview contrast as greatly with the same kids' fiery moves as they do with conventional stereotypes of ghetto-dwellers. ...
