Hunt herself is excellent in the old-fashioned, wisecracking best friend part she's made her own
The plot at first appears to be one of the stupidest of all time (even the characters seem stunned by it; they stagger back and say things like 'Wow').

However, I quite enjoyed the conclusion of this sequence (which ends visually as my suggestion begins); Duchovny, bloodstained, peers blankly into surgery ward while soundtrack continues the song "Return to Me" but minus the music, simply acappella.
Driver is an excellent actress, Duchovny is also charming with his subtle emotionalism, and director/actress/writer Bonnie Hunt delivers a strong performance as Minnie's best friend.

supporting star Bonnie Hunt fails to flesh out and explore.....Instead of progressing to an uncharted fusion of modern love and medicine, this film merely orbits around an unconvincing plot point.... ... Full Review

There are no fireworks for her in Return To Me, in which she plays a good girl who has led a sheltered life surrounded by a loving family.
In Return To Me she does a good job with a role that is quite similar to the character she played in An Ideal Husband - light and carefree.

As a romance, "Return to Me" is mildly engaging, but severely uneven.
"Return to Me," comedian-actress Bonnie Hunt's directorial debut (she also stars), has most of these assets--its two central stars, David Duchovny and Minnie Driver, are delightful here; the screenplay has quite a few very funny moments; and the whole package has such an innocence about it that to say it isn't a good movie, I fear, may cause me to appear to be a grump.

Return to Me" carries no surprises but floats nicely on the simple charm of innocent romance and the good company of endearing characters.
She has little delicacy with the architecture of plot and every meaningful moment is spelled out in capital letters, but she saves herself with marvelous comic instincts and a light touch with actors.

Without an inkling of cynicism, this feel-good film deals with second chances and destiny in a charming and often enchanting way.....The best date movie of the year has arrived with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny in the starring roles.....Touching and optimistic, "Return to Me" offers adult viewers a breath of fresh air.....The human interactions feel real, keeping the dramatic and comic moments nicely balanced..... ... The funny thing is that, though the gimmick is pretty ghoulish if you think about it, Return to Me is a relatively delightful and quaint little Moonstruck knock-off.
Still, Return to Me is a breezy little romancer that sparkles brightest when it forgets its organ-obsessed plot gimmick and focuses directly on its handsome leads and, especially, that infectious quartet of loveable old geezers.

With its feel good essence, Return to Me is a film that will easily leave itself open to criticism.
As predictable as it is, the energy in this film never flags and that, in and of itself

Return to Me offers a nice dose of old-style Hollywood: an old-fashioned romance with no gratuitous sex or violence of any sort, with its only cursing as comic relief.
But filmmaker Bonnie Hunt smartly cast a bunch of actors that play very well off each other, who just seem to be having a lot of fun.
