This movie is one of my top 5 best. I am a BIG fan of western movies. I think John Wayne deserved an award for this movie (and a few others) more than "True Grit".... Full review

Red River is a classic western. It is the movie were John Wayne transitioned from playing a young handsome lending man to playing the crusty middle age John Wayne character he played in most of the rest of his movies. It's... Full review

Hawks let his personal problems with Ireland hamstring his film.....director Howard Hawks , directing his first western, alternately perfected genre conventions....Dru isn't as good as Gray was.....Instead, the film gives us awkward dialogue scenes in which Cherry and Groot try to explain Matt to her (and I wish they'd have allowed us to hear those explanations, since Matt remains an enigma throughout).....We should value it instead for those scenes during which John Wayne was never better in his career, Mo ... What we remember with ``Red River'' is not, however, the silly ending, but the setup and the majestic central portions.
And ``Red River'' is one of the greatest of all Westerns when it stays with its central story about an older man and a younger one, and the first cattle drive down the Chisholm Trail.

Growing up, I thought of Wayne as Hollywood's heroic archetype, and actors such as Montgomery Clift (who costarred with him in Red River ), Marlon Brando and Paul Newman as the antihero reaction.
It's in those Wayne films I don't much like that he's a one-dimensional figure whose stubborn stride betrays arrogant certainty.

You always realize how great his films are after you're through enjoying yourself.
