Young John Wayne in a color epic!
Aug 28, 2007
william walker - imdb.com
I don't know of any other Wayne film before the forgettable '47 "Tycoon" that was filmed in color. All those classic '40s Republic westerns and war movies were filmed in B&W. After his epic B&W western "Union Pacific", DeMille had... Full review
In 1840, America's line life is the sea, with an intense commerce. In Key West shore, two ship savage companies dispute the wrecked vessels. The honest one belongs to the impulsive Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard) and Capt. Phil Philpott (Lynne... Full review
After the financial flopping of THE CRUSADES, Cecil B. DeMille concentrated on films dealing with different aspects of American history from 1760 to 1942. THE PLAINSMAN dealt with Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill, Calamity Jane, and even Custer. THE BUCCANEER... Full review

A common thread running through Cecil B. DeMille films is the leading lady having two men getting their hormones in an uproar over the leading lady. You've got Joel McCrea and Robert Preston rivals for Barbara Stanwyck in Union Pacific,... Full review

Produced and directed by the legendary Cecil B. DeMille. A rough and ready sea drama with very good special effects. Salvagers compete for the cargo of ships wrecked in the reef off the coast of Georgia. Some of the ships... Full review

Cecil B. DeMille, other than THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, produced and directed one of his best films, in this swashbuckler. Along with rough seas, sailing ships, beautiful southern ladies, sea wrecks [he always has to have that disasterous wreck]... Full review
Here's a lavish, exuberant tale of the high seas, produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, and presented with all the excess and spectacle the great showman built his career on. It involves shipwrecks, deep-sea diving, and giant squids, among... Full review
In 'Reap the Wild Wind' we have a chance to see Paulette Goddard, front-runner for the Scarlett O'Hara role until Vivien Leigh showed up, sporting a Southern accent and enjoying herself as a feisty Southern belle heroine. Unfortunately, her part... Full review

I loved this movie. All the stars were at their peak. They looked so glamorous and young and vital in their careers. I loved Paulette Goddard. In my personal opinion, she has been overlooked by so many. She was a wonderful... Full review

DeMille's movies often contain ludicrous dialogue and uneven performances, and this one is no exception. But as entertainment, it's hard to beat. The director's attention to detail, and his placing of the characters in interesting situations that show us what... Full review

Review by Keith Lofthouse: You get a sense of Reap The Wild Wind's storybook romantics when you realise that this is Bill Collins' favourite Cecil B DeMille epic... One smartarse critic cracked that the rubbery monster gave the best performance in the film (the special effects were duly awarded an Oscar) but the creature, static and clumsy with great goo-goo eyes reminiscent of Disney seems more like cartoon than killer these days. ... But Im afraid were accustomed to louder, faster, glossier goings on in our movies today than this one provides, and much of the film may seem slow or clumsy to modern filmgoers. Reap the Wild Wind" is somewhat modest compared to many of the producer/directors other projects, but it shows the mans touch in every scene, a bracing adventure of the high seas with more than a passing nod to "Gone With the Wind. ...
