The chip off the old block makes her directorial debut in 2007's Rails & Ties , but unfortunately the occasionally affecting melodrama has the misfortune of being borderline ridiculous.
Why does no character seem able to censor themselves from the most indulgently mean-spirited observations ("Everything is dying around you," snipes Tom's work buddy).

One would expect that with better, less predictable material she will mature into a talented director.....More complexity and gray areas would have made this a more interesting film.....She elicits strong performances from the actors and has ambitiously chosen emotionally weighty subject matter.....While it features three strong performance and the debut of a promising filmmaker, the story line is obvious and rather melodramatic..... ...
