But it is far more likely that they have simply been bewitched by this Pride and Prejudice 's magical charm.
Hardened critics who have sat through thousands of movies were almost unanimous in finding Pride and Prejudice heartwarming.

Though Austen's novel was set in 1813, the year of its publication, the film version takes place in 1835, reportedly so as to take advantage of the more attractive costume designs of that period.
Not surprisingly, a few changes had to be made to mollify the Hollywood censors (eager to find offense in the most innocent of material): the most notable is the character of Mr. Collins (Melville Cooper), transformed from the book's hypocritical clergyman to the film's standard-issue opportunist.

Yet, in any case, it is Greer Garson's picture all the way, and she is completely charming: spirited, assured, charismatic, commanding in every scene.
If the themes of gender manipulation, misjudgment, and class struggles within class struggles tend to get somewhat lost amid the romance and the smiles, the film's carefree attitude tends to carry the day.
