the director likes his actors more than he likes his own characters.....Pretty Bird tells its simple story with a hammy swagger, with all the actors going more for caricature than for realism.....slick handsome Billy Crudup, as a confidence man determined to peddle a new product, and the versatile Paul Giamatti.... ... The first part of this film is excellent, in particular a sex scene between Giamatti and his wife that is absolute comedic gold.

At is most airy moments, "Pretty Bird" alights with some funny interchanges between superficial market-man Curtis and gruff rocket-man Rick.

Loosely based on actual events, Pretty Bird is a darkly amusing look at the American Dream -- and the personal shortcomings we'll gladly endure (or ignore) in the pursuit of said dream.
Toss in a typically amusing supporting turn from Kristen Wiig , and a few really unexpected plot contortions, and you've got a fine indie flick that's definitely worth a look.
