This movie threatens what Americans, and people alike stand for. It demonstrates the differences of todays world with the 1950's, but in a way that tolerates the rashness of todays society. It not only exposes the immoral standards, especially in teenage... Full review

I thought everyone (even Don Knotts) deserved an Oscar nomination for this film. Joan Allen was mesmerizing, and you could see how good Reese Witherspoon was going to become. it deals with complex societal issues in a very nostalgic fashion that... Full review

Pleasantville is full of little pleasures, touching moments and grand ideas.
The performances are mostly topnotch, from the always superb William Macy and Joan Allen, who shine as Pleasantville's all-knowing parents; Reese Witherspoon is perfectly cast as the rebellious teenager who undergoes a huge transformation during her stay in this town; the film's most beautiful performance comes from Jeff Daniels as the soda fountain worker, who ultimately discovers his sense of independence and artistry.

Allen, Daniels, and Macy are wonderful; the camera really loves Allen, renders her beautifully in both color schemes.
Maguire and Witherspoon are great; this is probably one of Maguire's best performances.

The first half of the film is alot of fun seeing these somewhat modern day kids disturb the black and white everything in it's happy little place world that is Pleasantville.
There aren't very many films that share both wonderful visuals and an interesting surreal and heartfelt story.
