Well-crafted in most aspects, "Phantoms" is finally more ambitious than satisfying.
Friday January 23, 1998 There's much that's conventional about "Phantoms," a Dean Koontz tale of supernatural terror, but it does develop lofty intellectual ambitions and boasts a dry, witty performance by Peter O'Toole that lifts the level of the film beyond the routine.

Plagued by reckless leaps of logic, the movie starts with adequately eerie atmosphere and a perversely twisted performance by Scream 2 's Liev Schreiber, but decays into a familiar hash of gross-out effects, resulting from the annihilation of a small Colorado town by an evil force known as "The Ancient Enemy. ... To call Phantoms dissatisfying is to oversimplify the problem.
So begins Dean Koontz's Phantoms , a horror film that starts out creepy but ends up disjointed and borderline- incoherent.
It's the same old story: a promising premise, poorly realized.

There's only so much good actors and a skillful director can do with bad writing, and the cast and crew of "Phantoms" are saddled with as terrible a script as you can imagine.

If you are in the mood for a good old-fashioned scare-fest, then PHANTOMS would be an ideal choice for an evenings entertainment.
PHANTOMS is based upon the novel by fright master Dean Koontz, and features an effective screenplay by the author himself.

Christian Spotlight on the Movie
Phantoms is a suspenseful, relatively well done adaptation of the Koontz' novel.
Phantoms feels rushed and so the satisfaction of a well played out story evades the viewer.
The film maintains a moderate level of suspense throughout.
