John Sayles a genius? Look no further.

David - imdb.com
It's regularly noted that director John Sayles is a master at creating detailed characters; this film (like especially his earlier MATEWAN) proves his genius at capturing the oft-overlooked variety of American life: dialects, and the smallest (but most meaningful) moments... Full review

I have only caught up with two of Sayles' directorial works "Limbo" and "Passion Fish". Though the subjects of the two films are quite dissimilar, Sayles penchant for building interesting character profiles is unmistakable in both. Both films have an... Full review

Both women -- a pair of newly minted steel magnolias vividly acted by Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard -- are fish out of water and fresh out of zest when they first meet in the story's swampy milieu. Sayles's unnecessary grandstanding in these scenes only intrudes on the mood that McDonnell and Woodard have so carefully created. ... Full Review
