This film is unflinchingly pretentious, no doubt; how can it not be, with an artist as its main character and a conversation with Death as its climax. If there's one thing at fault, it's that Wenders doesn't allow the film's sulking mood to break, unlike Southland Tales ' canny and ultimately entertaining celebration of its own ridiculousness. ...
