An entertaining mess of a film

The third film in the Mariachi trilogy manages the impossible and outdoes Desperado in the excessively silly stakes. This is a mess of a film; an entertaining one, but a mess all the same. If Desperado had absolutely no plot... Read more at imdb.com

I had looked forward to seeing this film for some time, given the stellar cast. What I got was a plotless, ridiculous movie filled with ugly, sickeningly rendered comic book violence. Johnny Depp in particular is thoroughly wasted in his... Read more at imdb.com

Once Upon A Time In Mexico is good, but not as strong as Desperado. Our hero, El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) barely has any lines. Throughout the movie we forget this talented actor is the star of the movie. The explosive... Read more at imdb.com

Like "Desperado," the film offers nonstop action and a gargantuan body count. Robert Rodriguez knows how to please his audience, and the movie does work for the most part. As expected in a Rodriguez film, the action scenes are very... Read more at imdb.com

Qwipster's Movie Reviews
It could be amusing in a film that had drawn you into the story, but the gunfights and violence occur so often, and with so little vested interest, that they become nothing but mind-numbing excursions meant to pad an already bloated film to the maximum allowable capacity. ... Full Review

Further packed with elaborate deceptions and double-crosses, dream sequences, doppelgangers and baits-and-switches that take away from the already depreciated thrills, "Mexico" feels almost as if Rodriguez is making it up as he goes -- like a little kid playing cops and robbers (convenient getaway motorcycles appear out of nowhere during one shootout) -- and making few editorial choices along the way. ... Despite the movie's dark humor, violence and the occasional nonvoluntary facial surgery that will drive away the queasy, "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" is the most crowd-pleasing film in the series. That's probably because he was given a clever plot and great actors to work with. ... Full Review
