Lurie creates an excellent film which examines the difficulties journalists face on a daily basis.....Finally, the best part of the entire movie was the ending.....It is a very good ending to which a sequel could be written.....Lurie also creates very well-written, dramatic scenes..... ... you should catch up on if you like political thrillers.....Supporting work is equally strong with Angela Bassett, Noah Wyle, Matt Dillon and Alan Alda all giving some considerable depth to smallish roles that could have easily been thankless.....Lurie's script does a good job presenting some truths and not getting weighed down in liberal flag-waving..... ... It's hard to put a finger on anything actually wrong with this earnest drama of politics, conscience, and democratic ideals --....and I must emphasize that I like film critic-turned-filmmaker Rod Lurie ( Resurrecting the Champ ) not just....The noteworthy and honest performances from Beckinsale and her impressive costars, make it worth a look --.... ... What is deeply satisfying about "Nothing But the Truth" is....if he were the film's good guy.....his actors are effective playing personalities, not symbols.....the case inspiring the film was not heard by the Supreme Court.....There is a wonderful performance by Floyd Abrams as the federal judge;.... ... enjoy the movie for what it is:....Nothing but the Truth," a taut political thriller, takes some cues from recent events, adds a dash of over-the-top melodrama....a smart, occasionally funny combination of old-fashioned political thrillers in the tradition of John Frankenheimer with a touch of women-in-prison pulp worthy of Roger Corman.....Lurie has gotten better and better over the years....they've been brought to life by two gifted actresses, each working at the top of her game..... ... one that's blessed with excellent across-the-board performances.....Farmiga and Beckinsale are two talented, tough actresses in it for the long haul.....Thankfully, those ideas are handled with more grace and subtly than writer/director Rod Lurie's similarly topical film, The Contender .....But it's worth seeking out, standing as Lurie's best film work to date and a gentle reminder....Beckinsale, in particular, is surprisingly strong, imbuing her character with the right amount of vulnerability and fire.... ... Rod Lurie's "Nothing but the Truth" isn't ripped from the headlines so much as it's pasted together like a ransom note, using scraps so small their origins are indiscernible. Although "Nothing but the Truth" positions itself as an ardent defense of the 1st Amendment, it is at heart a tale of two mommies: Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale), an ambitious reporter for a D.C. daily, and Erica Van Doren (Vera Farmiga), whose intelligence career is ended when Rachel blows her cover in a front-page story. ... Lurie is expert at springing surprises and getting the best out of a first-rate cast. The feds, personified by special prosecutor Patton Dubois (a splendid, sneaky Matt Dillon), are suddenly eager to throw Rachel's ass behind bars. ... Full Review
