As such, the film succeeds in a way the filmmakers could never have planned. ... Full Review

Some critics praised the film, others dismissed its self-hating "Woody Allen.....Others drew parallels between the film and Allen's scandalous personal life.....It may be the last great film he'll ever make.....Allen decided to indulge his passion for death with this dirge about a depressed director whose mother (Uta Hagen) goes insane....Though he was no Gordon Willis, David M. Walsh creates classic comedic imagery in a deceptively nuanced style and one can't think.... ... Full Review

New York Stories" is rated PG, for profanity....Mae Questel as Allen's mother and Julie Kavner as a looney psychic are thoroughly delightful.....Despite the presence of Scorsese's fascinating style, it never intrudes upon the story, giving the entire film a feeling of effortlessness.....But the film is really about Nolte's artistic passions, which seem to thrive on personal pain.....The problem with this story is that it goes nowhere..... ... But the film is really about Nolte's artistic passions, which seem to thrive on personal pain.....New York Stories" is rated PG, for profanity....Mae Questel as Allen's mother and Julie Kavner as a looney psychic are thoroughly delightful.....Despite the presence of Scorsese's fascinating style, it never intrudes upon the story, giving the entire film a feeling of effortlessness.....Despite charming performers and some nice moments, this is a flat, lifeless effort and rather a disappointment after Scorcese' ... is not in the same league as that film, but even if it failed in the execution, you want to give it an unqualified A for effort; that is more than you can say for the trash Bollywood keeps churning out, to much hype, these days.

The visuals, performances and superb music provide many pleasures, but the slight, anecdotal inevitability of the tale is a drawback, since the material promises something richer and deeper.
The plot, inspired by Dostoevsky, seems meant as some sort of personal reflection on the links between artistic productivity and sexual/emotional frustration.

Well, in this uneven anthology, we get an extremely good drama from Scorsese, a shitty kiddy flick from Coppola and an inferior Woody Allen comedy.....Since then, besides the enjoyable "Peggy Sue Got Married" and maybe "The Godfather 3" and "Dracula", boy Coppola has done nothing but humiliate himself with crap mainstream films.....this really ain't a really good film.....The film is well written, and the direction is awesome.....Nolte and Arquette are also great, and so is the film..... ... the film is quite funny and entertaining.....if Allen's European films more successful.....Match Point is one of Allen's most successful pictures of all time, and it all but jump-started his career.....Allen's films Match Point and Cassandra's Dream, which by the way was highly underappreciated, were dramatic films.....if Allen's return to comedy set in New York is welcome.... ...
