There are some really great allegorical films that don't turn out to be great drama or good times in a movie theater. Kenan has curried favor from the sci-fi and comic-book-film crowd, and won a ringing endorsement from fanboy site aintitcool.com, with reviewer masswyrm enthusing, "I want to see more movies like this, a lot more movies like this. ... In "Monster House", it was better. In "Monster House", the technology was used to better effect because the characters were highly stylized and looked like animated characters. This is not a good thing when a film is trying to be hyper-realistic. ... Full Review

Gil Kenan's delightful throwback Monster House is one such home run, a kid's movie that doesn't traffic in pretension or talking down to its audience - this is a film very much in the vein of those now-classic Eighties films, the ones with stock characters that somehow transcend cliche and become fresh, forever lodging themselves in our collective cinematic memories. ... and the pyrotechnics at the end are perhaps a bit much, but Monster House is a tremendously fun movie that deserved better recognition than it got. The animation is suitably impressive, but the human characters have a decidedly cartoonish appearance that actually makes them more effective and much less creepy than the soulless automatons of that Christmas picture. ...
