Terrific and Underrated

This is a truly great mob movie but much more smartly done that most. The Cohens do a great job of underscoring the subtleties of the early mob days. Particularly is the use of the "ethical" concept in the movie.... Full review
Cohn brothers do gangsters

The film may say that the Cohn brothers wrote this film but a hell of a lot of it seemed influenced by the lesser known works of Dashell Hammett (The Glass Key & Red Harvest). The filming of the work of... Full review
A beautiful mix of gangster and film-noir

I really, really dug it. Everything just worked for me. The meshing of gangster with film-noir just seems right, and the fantastic dialogue combined with the twisty (but not too twisty) story makes for one helluva screenplay. Byrne is terrific here,... Full review
Truly Brilliant

This movie was overshadowed by some other mob movies at the time of release, notably GoodFellas (another one of my favorites). Difference is, this film is much more complex (you can watch it ten times and catch something new each time),... Full review
Not one of the Coen Brothers' best
Nov 24, 2007

This movie is disappointing with its trite story plot and not-so-impressive acting. It has an all-star cast with Gabriel Bryne and John Tuturro, but these faces fail to give performances that help shine this movie. First of all, we are all... Full review
Not Something I Enjoyed

I'm not fond of mobster films. Most of the time they are too violent. This wasn't so vicious, but I still didn't care for it. The story was a bit hard to follow and it dragged a little. I like Gabriel... Full review

Godfather I, II and Goodfellas take 1 step back. Take a bow to Miller's Crossing. Albert Finney's finest performance as Leo the underworld boss. The true Lead is Gabriel Byrne as Tom Reagan. This film by the always strong Coen Brothers... Full review
Another great Gangster film, but a bit too short.

Another Graet Gangster film, but a bit too short of a film is what we have here. I liked everything the movie is about. It has style, a great story line, and a great cast to boot. I dont know if... Full review
Best modern gangster file ever....

This has got to be, hands down, one of the best gangster films ever made, certainly in the last 20 years or so. Better even than Reservoir Dogs, I'd say...which is a great film too, but just not nearly the... Full review

Movies for Guys
All in all, it's a well made movie, but I find it hard to recommend it. To wit, all the characters are extremely two dimensional and seem more to represent archetypes instead of a real persons. ... Full Review

Easily one of the best looking films that the Coens, and maybe any filmmaker, have made in the past two decades, MILLER'S CROSSING manages to entice with gorgeous cinematography, tremendous set design, great actors spewing out fun dialogue, a number of extremely memorable scenes, and oh yeah... ... All in all, it's a well made movie, but I find it hard to recommend it. Now you might be wondering what the hell this has to do with this movie review, but please bear with me a bit more. ... Full Review

Morally vague and strictly pop, the film suffers from excessive style, motivated by the Coens' concern to show off familiarity with the gangster genre. His grievances disturb Leo's chief adviser and friend, Tom (Gabriel Byrne), a brooding gambler who senses Leo is losing control. ... Full Review

Big House Film
A striking feature of Miller's Crossing is its incongruous, by the standards of a gangster flick, deployment of beautifully serene, autumnal outdoor settings in the eponymous location outside of town which the film's structure continually brings it back to. ... Full Review

Guns, knives and blunt instruments played prominent parts in many of my favorite films for 2007. I don't know if that's because I'm reverting back to my cops-and-robbers and cowboy-loving childhood, or finding a vicarious release for my pent-up anger... ... Full Article
